Failed expectations and lackluster play have accounted for a higher boo-per-game (BPG) ratio this season. The Phillies, slacking sufferers of seven shutous so far this season, want to capitalize.
“When a Phillies fan boos, heat is emitted – if we capture this heat, we can potentially power the stadium,” said Steve Noworyta, director of Phillies operations.
If the team gets any worse, the Phillies plan on providing power for the entire city. ‘If we can’t generate electricity on the field, at least we can help light people’s homes,” said Noworyta.
When each fan enters Citizens Bank Park, they will be given a special mask designed to capture boos. The converted energy from an average boo is equal to 3.7 kilowatt hours.
When Mike Lieberthal pops out with runners in scoring position, enough boopower is generated to power Phanavision for two hours. When there is an Ed Wade sighting, most of the country’s power woes are alleviated.
“We are attempting to turn fan negativity into a positive," Noworyta explained. “The worse this team gets, the cleaner our city will be.”

I recently visited Citizens Bank Park this year for the Phillies vs. Nationals series and the Phillies vs. Cubs series. I was shocked at how often the fans bood the players. It seems as though they sit there, eating their snacks and drinking their beer, completely uninterested in whats going on with the game until they have the opportunity to get a boo in. They barely cheer when anything good happens. I can see why the Philly players look completely frustrated and bored out there. No matter what they do, they get bood! Born into a red sox frenzied family, I have been a sox fan for 31 years and have attended my share of games. Most recently, last evening when the sox beat texas. There is a completely different air in Fenway Park, the fans cheer and jeer every second. Yes...there are boos, but they are rightly issued. Support your team Phillies Fans!!! Give them extra cheer when they do something good and save the boos for the well deserved.
Hey anonymous - well stated. However, you are missing the point of the Philly boo ... we boo because we care. In a way it is the ultimate compliment. We know these guys can do better, we just have to boo them to greatness.
